BHS Celebrates Italian Heritage Month

This year’s Italian Heritage Month Project expresses what Italian Heritage means to the students of BHS’ Italian Program. The project is displayed in the B Hall and its message can best be read when walking “up” the hall, that is, right to left. Italian Club members, who came up with the plan, chose water as the unifying element of the project due to its importance in Italy’s everyday life and folklore and because it’s the most obvious physical connection between Italy and the United States. They filled the water with all sorts of sea life. Among others are the seamonsters Luca and Alberto, from the movie “Luca,” an octopus, a pink whale, and several sharks.

On the far right the project starts with a giant heart made up of smaller green, white, and red hearts. Each heart belongs to a student and is decorated with the student’s photo, his/her favorite aspects of Italian culture, and Italian expressions of encouragement. Next to the heart, coming out of the sea, is a green bottle through which the “heart” sends messages of love towards a poster of Italy. From “Italy,” a number of different kinds of boats are traveling towards the United States’ flag. Students dedicated the boats they crafted to Italians and Italian Americans who contributed to American life and culture. Among them are scientists, inventors, artists, singers, dancers, actors, fashion designers, and chefs.
